About my Champion
In 2007, I started working on this 1963 Champ pick-up project. I began by parting out a 1979 4X4 Jeep Wagoneer, keeping the entire drive train. I also parted out a 1963 Champ pick-up for the cab and bed. After many hours of modifications, the cab and bed of the ‘63 Champ were installed on the ‘79 Jeep drive train. The suspension and body mounts were replaced with polyurethane bushings. The suspension was enhanced by installing a 4-inch Super Lift suspension system, Pro Comp reservoir shocks, 2” heavy-duty shackles and a quick disconnect anti-sway bar. I kept the 360 AMC engine from the ’79 Jeep, then installed an MSD coil, billet Mallory distributor, 600 CFM Edelbrock carburetor and roller rockers to add performance. Edelbrock headers were added to the custom 4 ½” exhaust with a 2-chamber Flowmaster muffler. Edelbrock chrome valve covers and an air cleaner were also installed to spruce it up. A shift kit was added to the turbo 400 transmission to help improve performance. A custom aluminum radiator with electric fans was installed to keep the truck cool. In order to try and maintain a stock look, the only body modifications I made were shaving the antennae and fuel neck, removing the tailgate chains, adding a custom tailgate latch, and installing a hideaway trailer receiver hitch. The interior was modified by installing 2008 tan leather Honda Odyssey seats and a custom-made tan leather dash and headliner to match. The NOS door panels were dyed tan to also match the seats. I added several modern comfort features including tilt steering, power steering and brakes, remote power door locks, remote start, a back-up camera system, an auto-dim compass rear view mirror and Vintage Air air conditioning. The audio system that was added consists of a 7” touch screen DVD player, four 6” MTX speakers and two 10” MTX subwoofers with a 400-watt amplifier. The truck was topped off with a custom dark blue paint job and set on 18x10 Incubus off-road rims wrapped with 35x12.50 Toyo Open Country M/T tires.
